Bahuna Sutta - To Bahuna

Bahuna Sutta

To Bahuna

Thus I have heard, that on one occasion, the Blessed One was staying in Campa, on the shore of Gaggara Lake. At that time, venerable Bahuna went to the Buddha and, on arrival, having bowed down to him, sat to one side. As he was sitting there he said to the Buddha:

Lord Buddha, freed, dissociated, and released from how many things does the Tathagata dwell with unrestricted awareness?

Bahuna, freed, dissociated, and released from ten things,

does the Tathagata dwell with unrestricted awareness.

Which ten?

Freed, dissociated, and released from form,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from feeling,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from perception,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from fabrications,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from consciousness,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from birth,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from aging,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from death,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from stress,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Freed, dissociated, and released from defilement,

the Tathagata dwells with unrestricted awareness.

Just as a red lotus born in the muddy water and growing in the muddy water, rises up through and above the muddy water and stands with no muddy water adhering to it, in the same way does the Tathagata, freed, dissociated, and released from these ten things, dwell with unrestricted awareness.

Just as a blue lotus born in the muddy water and growing in the muddy water, rises up through and above the muddy water and stands with no muddy water adhering to it, in the same way does the Tathagata, freed, dissociated, and released from these ten things, dwell with unrestricted awareness.

Just as a white lotus born in the muddy water and growing in the muddy water, rises up through and above the muddy water and stands with no muddy water adhering to it, in the same way does the Tathagata, freed, dissociated, and released from these ten things, dwell with unrestricted awareness.

In all these ways does the Tathagata,

freed, dissociated, and released, dwell with unrestricted awareness.
