The Outcaste



Those lay followers endowed with the following five qualities, are outcastes amongst lay followers, a stain amongst lay followers, dregs amongst lay followers.



Which five?



They do not have conviction (in the Dharma Path &/or the Buddha's Awakening); are unvirtuous; are eager for protective charms &/or ceremonies; trust in protective charms &/or ceremonies, not in Kamma; and search for recipients of their offerings outside of the Sangha, giving offerings thereto first.



Those lay followers endowed with these five qualities,  are outcastes amongst lay followers, a stain amongst lay follower, dregs amongst lay followers.



Those lay followers endowed with the following five qualities, are jewels amongst lay followers, lotuses amongst lay followers, fine flowers amongst lay followers.



Which five?



They have conviction (in the Dharma Path &/or the Buddha's Awakening); are virtuous; are not eager for protective charms &/or ceremonies; trust kamma, do not trust protective charms &/or ceremonies; do not search for recipients of their offerings outside of the Sangha, but give offerings hereto first.



Those lay followers endowed with these five qualities, are jewels amongst lay followers, lotuses amongst lay followers, fine flowers amongst lay followers.
